Footsteps - Okavango Delta - Botswana
At Footsteps Across the Delta you enter one of the great, untamed regions of Africa, the spectacular Okavango Delta, and experience the astonishing contrasts created when the mighty Okavango River flows into the arid Kalahari Desert. The result is a variety of habitats, riverine forest, palm islands, permanent swamps and dry sandveld all with an unparalleled wealth of animal diversity. This Ker and Downey program maintains the elegance and eccentricity of the original 'African Safari under canvas'. The emphasis is on exploring this breathtakingly beautiful and diverse environment as the first African explorer's did, either by mekoro or on foot.
ACCOMMODATION
The Footsteps Across the Delta base is a comfortable private camp which accommodates guests in three specially designed twin bedded, insect proof tents with sewn-in floors. Each tent has its own bucket shower and bush toilet, and even a daily laundry service. The 'bush kitchen' run by our chef, prepares menus to whet all appetites.
ACTIVITIES
Walking in the Delta's wilderness is the highlight of a 'true safari' experience. No special training is required, as distances travelled are resemblant of early days, where the emphasis is on exploration and discovery - each morning tracking fresh spoor to reveal the nights events. Other possible activities include game-drives, mekoro trips or fishing, which vary throughout the year. The Footsteps walking experience combines well with the luxuries offered by either Shinde or Kanana.
ATTRACTIONS
• Footsteps Across the Delta offers a personal safari experience, hosting a maximum of 6 guests at a time, making it an ideal option for small groups of friends or family
• The emphasis on your stay at Footsteps is on guided walks where you have the time to focus on learning about tracking wildlife and understanding animal movement, patterns and behaviour, as well as more in depth information on trees, grasses and the finer details. Being on foot instead of in a vehicle affords this unique perspective.
• Footsteps Camp is the base of our Young Explorer's Delta packages, which is a family safari led by a specialist guide that tailors the safari to suit children as young as 6 years old.
COMMUNICATIONS
Footsteps is in contact with our Maun base by radio, messages can be passed onto guests by radio (urgent messages) or letter/mailbag (generally 24 hours or longer as less transfers out to Footsteps). We do not encourage general communication as part of the safari experience is being out of contact with life's normal communications overload, so there are no general telephones or internet access at the camps. However we do appreciate that some matters are of urgency or personal importance and are more than happy to assist.
