Ndumo Wilderness Camp - South Africa
Proclaimed in the 1920s, Ndumo Game Reserve ~ formerly known as Ndumo ` is one of South Africa's oldest and most scenic parks. It is situated in northern Natal and just south of the Mozambique border. Nyamithi and Banzi Pans, surrounded by beautiful yellow fever trees, are the focal points in the reserve. These pans are on the Pongola and Usutu floodplains and attract wildlife in large numbers. Ndumo is not well known, even to many South Africans, as accommodation has previously been limited. Ndumo Wilderness Camp has been built on the edge of Banzi Pan.
Ndumo Wilderness Camp is in the "Wilderness Zone" of the reserve, in an area not open to the general public. The camp is set in the most beautiful location, and offers eight superbly appointed tented rooms with en suite bathrooms. There is a separate pub/dining aria. The entire camp is raised up on a wooden deck and linked with a walkway several metres above the ground under a canopy of giant fig trees. There is a swimming pool
WILDLIFE
Good numbers of Black Rhino, White Rhino, Buffalo, Hippo and Crocodile occur, while Red Duiker, Giraffe, Nyala and Suni are all fairly common. Leopard and Hyena are in the reserve. As an additional activity at Ndumo, we can now offer day trips into Tembe Elephant Reserve to view Elephant. Ndumo is considered by many to be the finest bird~watdhing locality in South Africa. Over 400 species ~ 60 % of South Africa's birds ` have been recorded in the area. Green Coucal, Gorgeous Bush Shrike, Pinkthroated Twinspot and African Broadbill are among the Ndumo "specials". Time at Ndumo is spent on nature walks through forests of fig trees and through the bush, often tracking Rhino. Day and night game drives in open 4 x 4 vehicles around the various pans are a highlight.
ACCESS
Many of our guests travel to Ndumo after visiting the Kruger area to experience the wonderful contrast in scenery. Ndumo complements the Kruger/Sabi Sands Parks superbly. Access is quick, easy and surprisingly not that expensive by air charter from the Kruger National Park or its neighbouring private reserves. Alternatively, many guests self~drive into Ndumo.
