Madagascar Natural History - discover a world lost in time
If you want to experience some of Madagascar's best kept secrets and are prepared to camp in some of the reserves, this itinerary will take you from the lush tropical rainforests of the east, where you will hear the siren-like calls of the indri and see a wide variety of birds and reptiles. From here you will proceed by vehicle and boat along the Pangalanes Canal, man-made but now totally overgrown with indigenous plants and orchids, to the hotel Bushouse. You will have the opportunity of visiting a small Biotop station, where the owners have a nursery as well as a small reserve.
Then on to the Masoala Peninsula, the last of the pristine rainforest areas, and one of the best wildlife viewing areas in Madagascar. You will visit Nosy Mangabe, home of the illusive aye-aye and the leaf-tailed gecko. The final stop is Diego Suarez, the Montagne D'Ambre, an upland moist forest with its own microclimate and the Ankarana special reserve to the sunken forests and the Tsingy. Here you will see tall trees, orchids, a wide variety of birds and mammals such as the Malagasy king fisher, Madagascar paradise flycatcher, Sanford's brown lemur, crowned lemur and the rare flanouc. This itinerary is suitable for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike and is ideal for groups.
Best time to go: August to December. Not suitable for the months of January to April. Warning: the Masoala Peninsula generally has severe rainfall with a "dry window" mid-October - end November.
OPTION
Go beach-hopping for 4 days in the Masoala Peninsuala with a sea kayak.
