Madagascar beach holiday - St. Marie Island
Discover a "Robinson Crusoe" getaway island and simply relax. Suitable all year round except from late January - mid-March when cyclones can occur. St. Marie is a beautiful holiday island situated off Madagascar's east coast. Stretching along some 57 km, it has become one of Madagascar's most popular beach holiday venues. It is surrounded by abundant coral reefs and boasts what many rate as Madagascar's loveliest beaches. Most of these white, palm-fringed beaches are secluded coves. St. Marie also boasts the world's only pirate graveyard, as this was once a major pirate base. The reefs offer excellent snorkelling possibilities.
In August and September humpback whales and their calves can be viewed. St. Marie is known for its rare and spectacular orchids as well as reptiles and frogs. There are no taxis on the island and bicycles or mountain bikes can be hired for getting around. Excursions to the nearby island of Ille aux Nattes, which boasts some of Madagascar's best snorkelling reefs, can be arranged through your hotel. There are no phones connecting the island to the outside world, so advance booking is essential.
