4 Night Foot Safari 4 Star

Day 01

On arrival at Johannesburg International Airport, you make your way to the Avis Desk, and collect your rented car. From the airport you drive east over the highveld’s farmlands, down through the Mpumalanga Highlands, passing the village of Dullstroom to the Mpumalanga Escarpment. You will have some time to explore the escarpment area, which could include points such as God's Window, Bourkes Luck Potholes, Blyde River Canyon, Graskop, Pilgrims Rest and the many waterfalls of the area. This afternoon you descend the escarpment into the Lowveld and make your way to the Kruger National Park. Here you make your way to the private concession of Rhino Walking Safaris and check into the Plains Camp, where you spend the next (4) nights on a fully inclusive basis.

Rhino Walking Safaris offers exclusive use of 12 000 hectares of pristine bushveld in the only official wilderness concession in the Kruger National Park. Approximately 10km North East (as the crow flies) of Skukuza Rest Camp, the concession has a 15km boundary with Mala Mala in the Sabi Sands reserve with the game moving freely between the two reserves. The concession is an environmentally sensitive area, offering a great diversity of both fauna and flora and ideally placed for walking safaris in a big five officially declared wilderness area. Plains Camp, in the middle of the concession, is an 8 bedded Africa explorer style camp over looking the spectacular Timbitene Plain. The pick up or meeting point is outside the Skukuza Library unless guests are arriving by private charter to Skukuza Airport. The reservations office can assist with detailed information on directions and how to get there as well as any bookings for travel arrangements that you may require. Built in true pioneer tradition Plains Camp reflects the ambience of a 19th century naturalist’s rest. Offering four African explorer-style tents (en suite shower & loo) nestled in an Acacia Knobthorn thicket, the camp overlooks the spectacular Timbitene plain, abundant in game best viewed from the revitalizing plunge pool. An Africana book collection and treasures from another era weave the spell of olden days. The camp specializes in luxury walking safaris, the most rewarding way to discover the secrets of the bush and experience true wilderness & wildlife. The area is renown for its diversity of fauna & flora, and ideally placed for walking safaris in a big five officially declared wilderness area. No more than 8 guests on each safari, accompanied by two trails guides. The armed guides meet the stringent requirements of the South African National Parks and senior guides hold the highest qualification possible in South Africa. After an introductory brief on the ‘do’s & don’ts’ of bush walking safaris, and consulting the guests the guide will assess the fitness level and ideal walking time for the group and structure the trail accordingly. In the summer months departures are usually prior to breakfast and again in the late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. In winter a sumptuous breakfast is the normal prelude to the morning safari. Once the trailists have settled in the walk the guide will share his wealth of ‘bush culture’, from the identification of animals, trees, grasses, insects, birds, the medicinal uses of plants, local folk lore, basic skills of tracking animals, survival skills and everything that makes up this unique eco-system. Because in the bush, nothing is predictable, each safari offers a potentially new experience. Plains camp is the first trail camps to open on the concession, and a typical day would include an early start, a cup of fresh coffee and home made rusks (a South African tradition!) after which guests set out on their morning walk, following rhino trails and elephant paths. Returning to camp the walkers enjoy a leisurely brunch. A relaxing day can be spent around the pool overlooking the plain and waterhole, keeping an eye out for breeding herd of elephants often sighted. Following high tea guests set out again in the late afternoon for a walk, closing off with sundowners watching an African sunset.
