Tidal pools provide safe bathing and are perfect for children. A variety of cliff path walks and hiking trails are available. Hermanus offers a bird watcher the opportunity to observe birds in mountain, coastal, river and estuarine habits. Famous artists, sculptors, ceramicists, writers, jewelers and glass designers, quilters and photographers have settled here and brought international recognition to Hermanus. Hermanus is most famous for its whale watching - the town is considered by some to offer the best land-based whale watching in the world. The renowned Hermanus whale festival takes place every September, coinciding with the Southern Right whale's breeding season. Whales come here to frolic, nurse and breed and, some say, to show off to Hermanus visitors! If you're not content to just watch from dry land, many Hermanus whale viewing tours allow you to experience whale watching by boat - bringing you even closer to the action. Besides these activities, Hermanus affords the opportunity to relax on pristine beaches, or to explore the beautiful mountainside on well-made paths. There is no shortage of activities in this town, and the Hermanus visitor will have plenty to choose from! Known as the "Riviera of the South", Hermanus has become the winter escape of many Europeans from the harsh northern winter. Situated on the Cape south coast only 120km from Cape Town, Hermanus is also a popular weekend hide-away for city dwellers and the holiday destination of choice for visitors from all over the country, including whales! All in all, this is a whale watching town of unequalled charm and a treasure trove of surprises waiting to be discovered.
