Rovos Rail has earned a reputation in the world of rail travel to be the most luxurious train in the world. Establishment in 1989 by Rohan Vos, who came from the autospares business, Rovos Rail grew from one coach to what it is today. The coaches, many from the old SA Railways we refurbished and now show off wood-panel finishings, beautful carpets, luxurious suites and fine dining cars offering the best cuisine. A journey with Rovos Rail makes an exciting highlight to a Southern Africa safari itinerary. The journeys vary in length so can be easily tied in with other areas of interest.

The Suites on Rovos Rail are the epitome of luxury with big glass windows affording guests continual vistas. They are furnished in the old Edwardian thems, but the present day little luxuries have not been forgotten. Air-conditioning is standard in the suites, as is of course the ensuite bathrooms with hot water, hair driers and shaver plugs.

Journeys on Rovos Rail are made up of a series of departures lasting from 24 hours to a fortnight. The train winds through some of Southern Africa’s most beuatiful and vivid scenery, ranging from farmlands to mountains to vineyards to deserts to forests to rugged coastlines and African Savanna, at the same time taking in Southern African Highlights.

Rates and Dates for the Rovos Rail are based on a series of set departures for each jouney, be it northbound, southbound, east or west bound. The trains themselves are drawn by steam, diesel or electric locomotives, each source of power used for different sections of the rail journey. Each complete train set takes up to 72 passengers spread across the 36 royal, deluxe & pullman suites.
