Location

Vumbura Plains Camp is situated to the north of Mombo, in a private concession that borders the Moremi Game Reserve. Vumbura Camp provides guests with an array of activities in a majestic setting and is known to feature some of the best game viewing in Africa. What makes the Vumbura concession so unique is the fact this it is situated to the extreme north of the Okavango Delta. This area is home to almost every habitat and species that can be found in the Delta. The camp’s main living area is made up of dining, lounge and pub areas, which peek out from beneath a canopy of indigenous trees. All of these areas provide guests with glorious views across the floodplain. After a hot day of exciting activities, guests can take a refreshing dip in the plunge pool. For relaxation once the African sun has set, the star-gazing deck is hard to beat. Here you can lie back and stare at the star-lit African sky or share your interesting stories with other guests around the camp fire.

Accommodation

This Botswana camp offers eight luxurious tents that can accommodate up to 16 guests. One honeymoon tent with a king-size bed is available, and there is also one guide tent (which is exactly the same as the guest tents). A single wooden door gives you entrance to the canvas tents and all of the rooms feature en-suite facilities with two basins. Beds are situated in the middle of the room and provide stunning views over the tranquil waters outside. Each room has its own plunge pool and ‘sala’ - a comfortable deck to relax on and gaze out over the floodplain from. Fans are provided to keep things cool while indoor and outdoor showers are available for each room. Soaps, shampoos and insect repellents are supplied.

The Safaris

Vumbura Camp will provide you with some of the best African safari game viewing in the world. The exciting safaris will allow you to spot the likes of Sable, Elephant, Lion, Red Lechwe, Hippo, Buffalo, Tsessebe, Warthog, Crocodile, Leopard, Cheetah and Waterbuck. There are also very large Buffalo herds.

Half of the activities revolve around land activities such as game drives, while the other half are made up of water activities. This can change depending on flood levels. Game drive safaris are done on three 10-seater open 4x4 Land Rovers, each accommodating up to seven guests, and allows all guests an outside seat. Night Drive Safaris are also available, while walking safaris on nearby islands can be done on request. Guests can enjoy game viewing in any of the eight two-seater traditional mokoros (canoes). Two boats, each catering for six guests, can also be used.

General

The Owners
Dereck and Beverly Joubert are partners in Vumbura Camp, Little Vumbura and Duba Plains. They are two of the most successful wildlife film makers in the world, as well as dedicated conservationists who are committed to the preservation of wildlife, particularly in Botswana. Dereck and Beverly have worked in some of the remotest wildlife areas in the world for the National Geographic Society. This has allowed them to produce some of the National Geographic Society’s highest rated and awarded films, books and magazine articles.

Community involvement
Vumbura and Little Vumbura are part of the same community participation plan as Duba Plains. The plan aims to bring communities from around the Okavango Delta into the tourism mainstream. The villagers who live to the north of the Okavango have been granted the rights to this area, which allows them to get direct benefits from the wildlife through concession fees, employment opportunities and training.

Electricity & Water
This Botswana camp accommodation is equipped with a 220v generator which provides electricity to the kitchen and main areas when guests are away. The generators are generally turned off to maintain a peaceful environment at the camp once the guests return. Tents are run on a 12v battery to power the lights and fans. Hairdryers and other similar equipment are not catered for. Batteries for cameras can be charged on the generator while guests are out; therefore visitors are urged to bring a spare battery and charging unit.
