The Overberg Region is located in the Western Cape province of South Africa, the area stretches from the Hottentots-Holland Mountain range in the west all the way to the start of the Garden Route in the east with the Riversonderend Mountain range forming the northern border of the region. The landscapes vary from mountains to rolling hills of farmlands and some of the Western Cape’s most unique coastal areas.
The Overberg is known for its quirky small towns, beautiful private nature reserves, whale watching along the coast, and being home to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa and the meeting point of two oceans, the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.
Hermanus is a popular tourist destination, particularly from the months of July to November, as this is whale watching season and your chances of spotting a Southern Right Whale are high. Other towns in the area are Betty’s Bay, Kleinmond, Gansbaai, Riversonderend, Swellendam, and many more, all of which are great places to stop and explore. Cape Agulhas is always worth a visit to see the southernmost point of Africa. The Overberg is home to a few beautiful private nature reserves such as Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, Agulhas National Park, and De Hoop Nature Reserve.
The best times to visit are all year round, the summer months (September – April) are filled with lovely clear days with temperatures averaging 30 to 35 degrees Celsius, and the winter months (May – August) are just as beautiful, although quite windy at times, with average temperatures of 18 degrees Celsius. The Overberg is a popular destination for luxurious getaways to self-drive safaris, there is a wide range of accommodation options from guesthouses to 5-star lodges and hotels. With activities such as wine tastings, whale watching, nature walks, small-town shopping trips, and for the more adventurous, shark cage diving, there are plenty of ways to keep yourselves busy in this incredible region of the Western Cape.
