The Best 5 Safari Areas in South Africa

Mala Mala Game Reserve, adjoining the Kruger National Park’s mid-western boundry, this safari destination is iconic and guests to Mala Mala can expect nothing short of exceptional game viewing and in particular excellent predator activity. The natural diversity of wildlife is as it has been over thousands of years. Mala Mala as a safari destination could arguably be the best South Africa safari of the lot.

The Madikwe Game Reserve is located in the Malaria free Northwest Province. The reserve was established in 1991 and is one of conservation’s success stories. The area was historically rich in game and then became cattle & hunting farms, only to be reconciled and rehabilitated to its former glory as a tract of wilderness on the edge of the Kalahari.

Located in the Eastern Cape Province, Kwandwe Game Reserve forms part of the region’s rapidly developing conservation area that includes among other reserves the Addo National Park. The terrrain and habitat of the area is thick succulent bush, deep valleys and flowing rivers. It is host to all of the big five including both black & white rhino, and a plethora of other species. The Kwandwe Game Reserve serves as the perfect safari start or extension to a visit along the Garden Route that runs west along the coast toward Cape Town.

The Tswalu Kalahari is situated in the expansive region where the Groot (big) Karoo and Kalahari meet, the arid area offers a unique visual fest. Almost white grasslands, rocky mountains and red sands provide the back drop for this semi desert safari experience. Home to about 80 species of mammal including lion & black rhino, the real appeal to this safari destination are the myriad of desert adapted animals including the very rare aarvark (antbear) and pangolin.

The Little Karoo offers exceptional safari experiences with a wide variety of activities at the malaria free Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. An approximate 3 hour drive from Cape Town – this is an excellent opportunity to incorporate a safari with a beach destination. Boasting over 58 000 hectares of wildlife, indigenous flora and fauna, Sanbona is also home to rare San rock art, rich biodiversity and culture.
