14 Day South Africa Self-Drive
Our 14 day self-drive tour of South Africa, focuses on some of South Africa’s most beautiful destinations. The itinerary includes Cape Town, a safari in a private game reserve near the Kruger National Park, breathtaking scenery of the Mpumalanga Escarpment area, and a visit to Victoria Falls and Chobe National Park in northern Botswana. The itinerary is mostly on a self-drive basis during which we supply you with an Avis Rent a Car, and the last portion outside of South Africa is based on guided & assisted services. If you prefer, we can adapt the itinerary to lessen the self-drive portion, or remove it all together.
Day 01 Arrive Cape Town

On arrival at Cape Town International Airport you make your way over to the Avis Desk and collect your rented car. You self-drive the 25 minutes into Cape Town and check in at the Cape Town Hollow Hotel, where you will spend the next (4) nights on a bed and breakfast basis. Cape Town Hollow is located in the middle of Cape Town’s historical city centre and sits almost in the shadow of Table Mountain.
Day 02 - 04 Self-drive Cape Town, the Winelands and the Cape Peninsula
These 3 days are at your leisure to explore this beautiful city. On one day you could explore the city of Cape Town, including ascending Table Mountain by cable car, taking a boat ride out to Robben Island or explore some of the shopping areas that abound.


Another day could be dedicated for a leisurely self- drive around the craggy ocean view roads of the Cape Peninsula. There are many interesting stops along the way, such as the naval town of Simons Town, the African penguins at Boulders Beach, the Cape Peninsula Nature Reserve. Your third day could be spent on a self-drive exploring day of the Cape Winelands, and its picture perfect vineyards, mountains and homesteads. These explorative days of the Western Cape can be done by means of self-drive, or you may prefer us to arrange a guided day tours.
Day 05 Cape Town to Tangala Safari Camp, Thornybush Game Reserve

This morning you return your car to the airport and board your flight to Johannesburg, where you connect with another flight to Hoedspruit. On arrival at Eastgate Airport, you collect your Avis Rent a Car and self-drive to the nearby Thornybush Game Reserve, where you check in at the Tangala Safari Camp for (3) nights on a fully inclusive basis.
Day 06 - 07 On safari at Tangala Safari Camp, Thornybush Game Reserve

For the duration of your stay at Tangala Safari Camp you will be hosted by the rangers and staff, and will enjoy twice daily guided game viewing safaris. These take place in the early morning and again in the late afternoon - early evening. Tangala is one of the last remaining authentic safari experiences in South Africa. This intimate and tasteful safari camp is situated in the 22000 acre Thornybush Private Game Reserve.
Day 08 Self drive from Tangala to the Mpumalanga Escarpment

This morning after your safari and breakfast you take a leisurely drive up the Mpumalanga Escarpment and have the opportunity to take in some spectacular natural sightseeing points, such as the Blyde River Canyon, God’s Window, Bourkes Luck Potholes and some of the many waterfalls that characterize this forested and mountainous area. This afternoon you check in at the Crystal Springs Mountain Resort for (1) night on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.
Day 09 Self drive from Crystal Springs to Johannesburg
This morning you have the opportunity to take either do some more exploring of this area, before taking a leisurely drive to Johannesburg.


A good place to stop for lunch is the Mpumalanga Highlands town of Dullstroom, famous for its trout fishing, boutique shops and many restaurants. This afternoon you arrive in Johannesburg and check into the Safariclub (located very close to the OR Tambo International Airport), and overnight here on a bed and breakfast basis.
Day 10 Fly Johannesburg to Victoria Falls

This morning you drop off your rented car at the OR Tambo International Airport, and board your flight to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. On arrival you will be met and transferred to the Lokuthula Lodges where you check in for (2) nights on a bed and breakfast basis. Situated in close to nature surrounds, just 4 kilometres from Victoria Falls, the Lokuthula Lodges are fully equipped thatched units with everything you would expect from a great safari lodge in Africa.
Day 11 Explore Victoria Falls

This morning you will be collected at your hotel and taken on a guided tour of the Victoria Falls, followed by a visit to a working African Village known as Monde Village. At Monde Village visitors can expect to see a day to day working African village. Guests get to meet some of the locals and get a feel for what modern day rural Africa is about. After some time for lunch & releaxation back at your hotel you will be collected again and taken on a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River with drinks and snacks included.
Day 12 Victoria Falls to Chobe Safari Lodge, Northern Botswana

This morning you will be collected from your hotel and transferred across the border into northern Botswana. You will arrive at Chobe Safari Lodge and check in there for (2) nights on a full board basis. Included in your stay is two guided game drives into the Chobe National Park (with park fees included) and two boat cruises and permits. Additional activities can be booked at the lodge.
Day 13 On safari at Chobe Safari Lodge
Today you enjoy the guided activities that explore the Chobe National Park and Chobe River.


A day for magnificent African scenery, wildlife and spectacular sunsets. The game drives are conducted into the Chobe National Park, while the boat cruises are on the Chobe River, park’s northern boundry.
Day 14 Chobe Safari Lodge to Johannesburg
This morning after your breakfast you will be transferred by road, back across into Zimbabwe and onto the Victoria Falls Airport. Here you board your flight back to Johannesburg, South Africa.
