What is the best age for children to go on a safari?

Most families find safaris ideal for children aged six and older, but some lodges accept younger children and offer appropriate activities. Tweens & Teens enjoy the full range of safari experiences, including longer game drives and walking safaris in certain destinations,  however children under 6 yrs can quickly lose interest in the confines of a game viewing vehicle, so if your kids are in that age group we might suggest a shorter safari component and focus on more energy expending activities such as beaches, mountains and other age appropriate activities.

Are there malaria-free safari options?

Yes. South Africa has several renowned malaria-free reserves that are perfect for families, providing excellent wildlife viewing without the need for malaria medication. Your consultant can recommend destinations based on your family’s needs.

Are Game Drives appropriate for Children under 12yrs?

Yes, but with children under 12 yrs it is advisable (and sometime mandatory) to book a private vehicle for safaris. By doing this the length of the drive can be adjusted and the guide can focus on delivering an experienced geared to both the children and parents. Many of the family friendly lodges have other in junior ranger programs, animal tracking, bushcraft lessons, cultural visits, nature walks, and creative lodge activities.

How long should a family safari be?

A typical family safari lasts between 8 – 10 nights, depending on your children’s ages and your travel plans. Shorter itineraries work well for younger families, while older children often enjoy longer, more in-depth safaris that combine multiple destinations.
