After arriving in Windhoek, you will be met by a representative from the rental car company and transferred to their offices to complete your vehicle handover. Here you will receive your travel documents, go through the vehicle details and have the opportunity to ask any last-minute questions before setting off on your journey. Before leaving the city, you may wish to stop for supplies, fuel and snacks for the road ahead. Once ready, you will begin your drive south toward the Kalahari, following well-maintained roads through open landscapes that gradually transition into the red sands of the desert. The drive is straightforward and scenic, giving you your first taste of Namibia’s vast open spaces and quiet roads.
Your home for the next two nights is Kalahari Camelthorn Lodge, set within a private reserve known for its striking red dunes, scattered camelthorn trees and peaceful desert atmosphere. The lodge offers comfortable chalets built from natural materials that blend seamlessly into the surrounding environment, creating a warm and inviting place to relax. Wildlife such as oryx, springbok, kudu and other desert-adapted species are commonly seen in the area, often right from the lodge itself.
During your stay, you can enjoy a variety of activities that highlight the unique character of the Kalahari. A guided Bushman walk is included, offering fascinating insight into the traditional knowledge of the San people, including tracking techniques, plant uses and survival skills in this arid environment. Optional activities include nature drives across the dunes and relaxed sundowner excursions, where you can take in the changing colours of the desert and enjoy spectacular sunsets. With its calm setting, wide-open landscapes and rich cultural heritage, the Kalahari is the perfect introduction to your Namibian self-drive adventure.
Travel Time: Around 6 to 7 hours (approximately 390 km)
Today you leave the red dunes of the Kalahari behind and begin your journey toward the iconic Namib Desert. This is one of the longer drives on your itinerary, but it is incredibly scenic, taking you through changing landscapes, small settlements like Maltahöhe, and over the beautiful Tsaris Pass. Along the way, you will experience some of Namibia’s most dramatic scenery, with wide-open plains, rugged mountains and endless desert horizons.
Your base for the next two nights is Desert Homestead Lodge, located on a private reserve just outside the Sossusvlei area. The lodge offers comfortable, air-conditioned chalets designed in a rustic desert style, each with its own veranda overlooking the vast Namib landscape. With its peaceful setting, wide-open views, swimming pool and relaxed atmosphere, it is the perfect place to unwind after your journey. The lodge is also known for its horse-riding experiences, scenic viewpoints and easy access to the Sossusvlei entrance.
The following day, you will rise early for breakfast before making your way to Sesriem Gate, the entrance to Sossusvlei, which is about a 30 to 45-minute drive from the lodge. It is best to arrive early to make the most of the cooler morning temperatures and softer light. Spend the day exploring the area’s highlights, including the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei, the striking white clay pan of Deadvlei with its ancient dead trees, the popular Dune 45 and the impressive Sesriem Canyon. For those feeling adventurous, climbing Big Daddy—the tallest dune in the area—offers incredible panoramic views over the desert.
You can choose to return to the lodge for lunch or take a packed lunch with you to enjoy out in the dunes, giving you more time to explore this remarkable landscape. Optional activities in the area include guided Sossusvlei excursions, hot air balloon safaris at sunrise for a truly unforgettable aerial view of the desert, and scenic nature drives on the reserve. These experiences offer different perspectives of one of Namibia’s most iconic and breathtaking regions.
Travel Time: Around 5 to 6 hours (approximately 350 km)
After breakfast, you will begin your journey north toward the Atlantic coast. The drive takes you through some of Namibia’s most striking and ever-changing landscapes, including a stop at the small settlement of Solitaire—well known for its famous apple pie—before crossing the Tropic of Capricorn. As you continue, you will pass through the dramatic Gaub and Kuiseb Canyons, where deep valleys and rugged terrain contrast beautifully with the vast open plains. The route then opens up into the Namib Gravel Plains, where the desert stretches endlessly before gradually giving way to the cooler coastal air.
As you approach the coast, you have the option to drive via Walvis Bay or take a recommended detour via Ganab to explore the fascinating Welwitschia Plains and the Moon Landscape. These areas offer a unique and almost surreal environment, with ancient plants, unusual rock formations and expansive desert views that feel truly otherworldly. This region also forms part of the Skeleton Coast, known for its stark beauty, Atlantic fog and rich history of shipwrecks along its shores.
You will spend the next two nights at Swakopmund Luxury Suites, ideally located to explore this charming coastal town. Swakopmund offers a refreshing contrast to the desert, with its cooler climate, German-influenced architecture and relaxed seaside atmosphere. During your stay, you can choose from a wide range of activities, including dolphin and seal cruises in Walvis Bay, Sandwich Harbour excursions where dunes meet the ocean, quad biking and sandboarding on the dunes, or kayaking along the coast.
There is also plenty of time to relax and enjoy the town itself, with its cafés, restaurants and seaside promenades offering great spots to unwind while overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Whether you are seeking adventure or a more relaxed coastal experience, Swakopmund provides the perfect balance before continuing your journey.
Travel Time: Around 4 to 5 hours (approximately 350 km)
Today marks the final leg of your journey as you travel from the cool Atlantic coastline back to Namibia’s capital, Windhoek. The drive takes you inland through ever-changing scenery, from coastal desert landscapes to the rolling hills of the central highlands. It is a comfortable and straightforward route, offering a relaxed end to your self-drive adventure.
On arrival in Windhoek, you will return your rental vehicle, bringing your Namibia road trip to a close. After the vehicle handover, you will be transferred to Hosea Kutako International Airport, which is located approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour outside of the city. It is recommended to allow enough time for your transfer and check-in, as international flights require check-in at least two hours before departure.
As you depart, you will take with you unforgettable memories of Namibia’s vast deserts, dramatic landscapes and incredible experiences along the way.
