4 day Zanzibar Slave Route Tour

The Spice Island of Zanzibar.  This 4-day tour of Zanzibar explores the dark and sobering history of slavery that makes up so much of what Zanzibar was notorious for slave Centre Market up to 6th June 1873, when the slave trade was abolished and the slave market closed.  At one time it was also a centre move for the slave trade. This tour can easily be extended to include some time at one of the idyllic beach lodges or resorts along Zanzibar’s turquoise coastline.

The cathedral signifies a potent time in Zanzibar’s history and stands on the sight of a past slave market, its high altar standing on the exact site of the Old Whipping Post. Slavery was abolished in 1873 through a decree passed by the then-current Sultan of Zanzibar. From here we visit the residence of the late Sultans of Zanzibar, ‘Tip Tip House’, the Old Fort, ‘Peoples Palace’ and the House of Wonders, full of intrigue and vivid history from a bygone era. The tour ends with a stroll through the narrow streets of the old stone town, the heart of Zanzibar’s vivacious history with time for shopping. Lunch at a local restaurant.

At 15h00 depart on your boat trip to Prison Island, the former prison for slaves and quarantine station for Zanzibar, is a worthwhile experience.  Here you will also experience watching giant tortoises and Flying Peacocks’  in the wild, shall have a very delicious dinner at a local restaurant before returning to your hotel for overnight.

We used African Travel again for the second time over Xmas and New Year. Once again, every little bit of our trip ran smoothly and without a hitch. Their communication was great throughout and we will, no doubt, be returning to them in the future too. Thanks Petru.

We had the most amazing time on our self drive tour of Namibia organised through African Travel Gateway. Everything from the planning and booking process, to the arrival and welcome in Windhoek, to the app with the itinerary and directions made for a really relaxed and well organised holiday. But the most important part was getting to experience Namibia - what a spectacular country! The only negative was that we should have booked for longer!
