Departure to Lusaka
Today your journey begins with a flight from Lusaka to Mfuwe Airport, the gateway to South Luangwa National Park. The flight takes around 1 hour and 10 minutes. When you arrive in Mfuwe, you will be met and transferred to a partner lodge of Luambe Camp, about a 45 minute to 1 hour drive away, this transfer will also become a small game drive as you will most likely start seeing wildlife as soon as you enter the park.
Once you arrive, you can settle in and relax for the evening, enjoying the peaceful surroundings of the African bush. This is the perfect chance to unwind and prepare for the exciting walking safari that begins the next day.
After a hearty breakfast, you will depart the lodge and travel through the northern part of South Luangwa National Park on your way to Luambe National Park. The transfer takes approximately 3 to 4 hours and offers wonderful opportunities to spot wildlife along the way as you pass through beautiful riverine forests and open bushveld.
Luambe Camp is set along the banks of the Luangwa River, offering stunning views of the surrounding wilderness right from your tent. With only four tents, the camp offers a truly intimate and exclusive safari experience. Each spacious tent is comfortably furnished with four-poster beds, an en-suite bathroom, an indoor seating area and a private veranda overlooking the river, where wildlife is often seen coming down to drink.
After arriving at camp, you will enjoy afternoon tea while receiving a briefing about the walking safari and what to expect over the next couple of days. Later in the afternoon, head out on a game drive to explore the area before returning to camp in the evening for a delicious dinner enjoyed around the boma under the African night sky.
Today your walking safari truly begins as you set out on foot to explore the remote wilderness of Luambe National Park. After a light breakfast and coffee, you will depart camp in the early morning while temperatures are still cool. Each day typically includes around 3 to 4 hours of walking in the morning and a further 2 to 3 hours in the afternoon, depending on wildlife sightings and the pace of the group. As you walk through riverine forest, open savannah and along the banks of the Luangwa River, your guide will share insights into animal tracks, plants and the delicate balance of the ecosystem.
Luambe National Park is a quiet and lesser-visited wilderness area, known for its healthy populations of elephants, hippos, buffalo and plains game, as well as predators such as lions and wild dogs. You will be accompanied at all times by an experienced Luambe Camp guide and a Zambia National Parks scout, ensuring both safety and expert interpretation of the bush.
During the heat of the day you will pause in the shade for a relaxing lunch break and some time to rest before continuing your walk later in the afternoon as temperatures begin to cool. By evening you will arrive at your mobile camp set along the riverbank. These special mobile camps offer a truly authentic bush experience, where comfortable beds are set out under the open sky with mosquito nets and soft linens for a restful night in nature. As the sun sets over the river, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner and the peaceful atmosphere of the wilderness, falling asleep to the sounds of the African bush all around you.
This morning you wake early for the final walk of your safari, rising from your star bed as the bush begins to come alive with the sounds of the morning. After a light refreshment, you will set out on foot for your last stretch of the walking safari, making your way back toward Luambe Camp. The walk typically lasts a few hours and offers one last chance to enjoy the landscapes, wildlife and quiet moments that make walking safaris so special. On arrival, a hearty brunch will be served beneath the shade of the trees.
After brunch, you will be transferred back to Luambe Camp for your final night in the wilderness. The afternoon is often spent enjoying the peaceful surroundings, and in the evening guests gather around the campfire to share stories and reflect on the experiences of the past few days while enjoying dinner under the African night sky.
As all good things do, your time in the Luangwa Valley comes to an end today. After enjoying your final breakfast overlooking the river, you will be transferred to Mfuwe Airport, a drive of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours depending on road conditions and wildlife sightings along the way.
On arrival at the airport, you will check in for your scheduled flight back to Lusaka, which takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes. From Lusaka you can continue your onward journey, taking with you unforgettable memories of your walking safari through the beautiful wilderness of South Luangwa and Luambe National Parks.
