On this 7 day Self-Drive Tour of Namibia we supply you with a rental vehicle (4x4) and lay out a desert oriented itinerary that takes in the Mariental area to the south of Windhoek, then continues to the red dunes of Sossusvlei before heading to the Atlantic Ocean town of Swakopmund steeped in history and offering a host of exciting activities. The itinerary starts and ends in Windhoek. We also offer a guided version of the same route.
Day 1 - Windhoek to Suricate Kalahari Tented Lodge, Mariental
On arrival you will be met by a representative who will present you with your info pack and brief you on your tour before facilitating the signing over of your rented car. You depart Windhoek in a southerly direction for the Intu Afrika Kalahari Game Reserve near the town of Mariental. Here you check in at the Intu Afrika - Suricate Kalahari Lodge for (2) nights on a full board basis, which also includes a Bushman guided morning and a sunset drive on one of your evenings.
Situated on a big red sand dune that overlooks the Auob wetlands, the Suricate Tented Lodge is located in the 10 000 hectare Intu Afrika Kalahari Game Reserve. The camp has just 12 luxury open air en-suite safari tents that have all the amenities you would expect from a hotel room. The nearby main area of the lodge The main lodge area is also intriguing as it boasts a large deck that with a swimming pool to while away the hot afternoons. At night there is a fire pit where guests can sit around under a canopy of stars that only the desert of Namibia can offer.
Day 2 - Suricate Kalahari Tented Lodge, Mariental
This morning early you will be guided by a local “San” Bushmen tracker for a fascinating early morning walk, including a visit to a Bushmen community. During the morning you will benefit from an insight into the vanishing art of tracking and craft making. This afternoon you will join a sunset nature drive on the Intu Afrika Reserve.
Day 3 - Mariental to Sossusvlei Lodge, Sossusvlei
Today after breakfast you head west to the world famous Namib Desert. Here you check in at the Sossusvlei Lodge for (2) nights on a full board basis using a superior room.
The iconic red dunes of the Sossusvlei are situated in the Namib Naukluft Park. The Sossusvlei Lodge is conveniently located at the park entrance. The rooms are air conditioned and enjoy views of the ever changing colours of the Namib Desert. The lodge has its own beer garden, swimming pool and sundowner deck. Its easy to spend a number of nights here as activities on offer in this visually exqhuisite area include: sundowner nature drives, guided excursions to the red dunes and Dead Vlei, Quad buggy trails, hot air ballooning. nature walks and more.
Day 4 - Sossusvlei Lodge, Sossusvlei
This morning we suggest an early morning self guided drive to Sossusvlei Dunes, (some of which reach nearly 400 m in height), and a visit to Sesriem Canyon. Early is better to avoid heat but also catch the brilliant colours that the low sunlight brings out. Various guided excursions can also be booked directly at the lodge (for your own account).
Day 5 - Meerkat Guesthouse, Swakopmund
After breakfast this morning you depart the Namib Naukluft Park and drive toward Swakopmund. The drive itself is also interesting as on the way you will pass the Gaub and Kuiseb Canyons, and drive over expansive gravel plains that characterize certain areas of the Namib Desert. At Swakpomund you check in at the Meerkat Guesthouse for (2) nights on a bed and breakfast basis. Centrally located the Meerkat Guest House is a small but peaceful and inviting guest house. Its staff are always ready to provide information and advice on the area, or even to provide lunch packs for your day’s activity.
Day 6 - Meerkat Guesthouse, Swakopmund
Today you could spend the day exploring this charming historical town, or even drive the 35 km to the harbour town of Walvis Bay. Swakopmund has its origins in the 1800s and has a very strong German influence that has become ingrained the modern day Namibian culture. It is the last significant town on Namibia’s northbound coastline that leads to the vast and fascinating wilderness of the Skeleton Coast. Activities abound in Swakopmund and can include quad biking, horse riding, dolphin spotting boat cruises, paragliding, fishing, sightseeing and various desert tours.
Day 7 - Swakopmund to Windhoek
This morning after your breakfast to drive the 350 km road back to Windhoek Airport where you will return your rental vehicle and board your afternoon departure flight.
