Today you board your flight from O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to Victoria Falls Airport in Zimbabwe, a journey of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to Ilala Lodge, a short drive of around 20 to 25 minutes. Here you will spend the next two nights on a bed and breakfast basis, ideally located within walking distance of Victoria Falls and the surrounding attractions.
Ilala Lodge offers a peaceful and relaxed setting with beautifully maintained gardens that border the Zambezi National Park, allowing for occasional wildlife sightings from the property. The rooms are comfortable and well-appointed, featuring air conditioning, Wi-Fi and modern amenities to ensure a pleasant stay. With its traditional thatched roofs and warm African character, the lodge provides a welcoming and authentic atmosphere, making it the perfect base from which to explore Victoria Falls.
After breakfast depart on a guided tour of the falls and Mpala Village. Our first stop is the Big Tree - a massive baobab many hundreds of years old with a girth of some 22 meters. The tour continues to the Falls themselves, starting at Livingstone’s statue and Devil’s Cataract and proceeding through the rainforest to Danger Point. The total walk is 3 km with many spectacular viewpoints along the way. Raincoats are available for hire at an additional cost.
The day’s insight into real African rural life starts with a visit to a rural primary school. Proceed to a business centre in the village, and end the morning with visits to two homesteads to meet the local people. Transfer back to town early afternoon.
Transfer to the jetty for a cruise along the Upper Zambezi in the late afternoon. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the Zambezi River in relaxation, with local wines, beers, soft drinks and snacks served during the trip. This trip often offers a magnificent chance to witness a spectacular African sunset. Cruise back to the jetty for transfer back to the hotel after sunset.
After breakfast, you will be transferred by road across the border into Botswana, a journey of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on border formalities. You will travel to the Kasane Forest Reserve, located near the Chobe River and close to Chobe National Park, where you will check in to Elephant Valley Lodge for the next two nights on a fully inclusive basis.
Elephant Valley Lodge is set in a peaceful bush environment and offers a relaxed safari atmosphere with comfortable tented-style accommodation that blends into the natural surroundings. The lodge overlooks a natural waterhole that regularly attracts elephants, giving guests the opportunity to enjoy incredible wildlife sightings right from the main lodge area. Spacious tents, a swimming pool and open lounge and dining areas provide a comfortable base between activities. Its location makes it ideal for exploring Chobe National Park, known for its large elephant herds, abundant wildlife and scenic riverfront, ensuring a memorable safari experience.
Today is dedicated to exploring the incredible wildlife of Chobe National Park with morning and afternoon game drives led by experienced guides from Elephant Valley Lodge. Early morning drives offer the best chance to see predators such as lions and leopards while they are still active, as well as large herds of elephants and buffalo moving through the bush. Afternoon drives continue into the cooler hours of the day, often ending with beautiful sunset views over the landscape.
Chobe National Park is one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations and is especially famous for its vast elephant population—one of the largest concentrations in the world. The park’s diverse habitats, including riverfront, woodland and floodplains, support a wide variety of wildlife such as giraffe, zebra, antelope, hippos and crocodiles, along with abundant birdlife. The nearby Chobe River plays a vital role in attracting animals, creating excellent game-viewing opportunities throughout the year and making each safari both exciting and rewarding.
Today you will be transferred from the lodge to Kasane Airport, a drive of approximately 15 to 20 minutes, in time for your light aircraft flight into the Okavango Delta. The flight takes around 1 to 1.5 hours and offers incredible aerial views of the waterways and islands that make up this unique ecosystem. On arrival at the airstrip, you will be met and transferred by boat to Xugana Island Lodge, where you will spend the next two nights on a fully inclusive basis.
Xugana Island Lodge is one of the original lodges in the Okavango Delta and is set on a lush island overlooking the tranquil Xugana Lagoon, one of the most beautiful permanent water sites in the region. The lodge features spacious reed and thatch chalets raised on wooden platforms, each with private viewing decks offering stunning views over the lagoon. The main lodge area includes open lounge and dining spaces, a bar and a swimming pool, all designed to make the most of the peaceful surroundings. The area is rich in wildlife, with hippos and crocodiles frequently seen in the water, along with a wide variety of birdlife. Activities include mokoro (dug-out canoe) excursions, motorboat safaris, fishing and birdwatching, all led by experienced guides who bring the Delta’s unique ecosystem to life.
Today is spent exploring the pristine waterways and islands of the Okavango Delta, one of Africa’s most unique and celebrated wilderness areas. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Delta is a vast inland oasis where seasonal floodwaters transform dry land into a network of lagoons, channels and islands. Surrounded by mopane woodland and Kalahari thornveld, this rich ecosystem supports an incredible diversity of wildlife and birdlife.
Activities are centred around the water, offering a different perspective of safari. Glide quietly through the channels in a traditional mokoro (dug-out canoe), explore the lagoon by motorboat, or enjoy guided nature walks on nearby islands. The Delta’s clear waters attract a wide range of animals, including elephants, lechwe, hippos and crocodiles, while predators such as lions and leopards can also be found in the area. Birdlife is especially prolific, with species such as kingfishers, herons, fish eagles and many others commonly seen. This peaceful and immersive environment offers a truly special safari experience, combining exceptional wildlife viewing with the tranquil beauty of the Delta.
After an early breakfast, you will be transferred by light aircraft from the Okavango Delta to Maun Airport, a flight of approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, offering one last aerial view of the Delta’s winding waterways and islands.
On arrival in Maun, you will connect with your onward flight to O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, which takes around 2 hours. This marks the end of your Southern Africa safari, leaving you with unforgettable memories of Victoria Falls, Chobe National Park and the remarkable Okavango Delta.
