Walking safari in the Selati Game Reserve
Departure from the Selati Game Reserve
Whether arriving by light aircraft, road transfer or self-driving, your walking safari begins at the Selati Game Reserve headquarters where you will meet your experienced guides and receive a briefing on the adventure ahead. From here, you will be transferred deeper into the reserve to a remote wilderness camp that will serve as your base for the next five days. The reserve is known for its beautiful bushveld landscapes and rich wildlife, providing an ideal setting for an authentic walking safari experience where the focus is on exploring nature at a slower, more immersive pace.
The secluded wilderness camp is completely off-grid and carefully designed to blend into the surrounding environment while minimising its ecological footprint. With just four safari tents, the camp offers an intimate and peaceful atmosphere. Each tent is comfortably furnished with the essentials needed after a day on the trail, and the central camp area provides a welcoming space to relax and enjoy meals prepared over the fire. Evenings are often spent gathered around the campfire beneath star-filled skies, listening to the sounds of the African wilderness all around you.
Your days on safari follow the natural rhythm of the bush, beginning just before sunrise when wildlife is most active. After an early wake-up call, enjoy tea, coffee and a light breakfast around the campfire while listening to the sounds of the African wilderness coming to life. Shortly after sunrise, you will set out on foot with your experienced guides to begin your morning tracking experience. As fresh spoor is discovered, your guides will demonstrate how to interpret tracks and other subtle signs in the environment—identifying species, estimating how recently animals passed through the area and understanding their movement and behaviour. Walking through the reserve offers a unique perspective of the bush, allowing you to notice smaller details such as plants, insects, birdlife and animal interactions that are often missed from a vehicle.
You will return to camp late in the morning for a hearty lunch and time to relax during the warmest part of the day. This quiet period allows you to unwind, read or simply take in the peaceful surroundings before the afternoon activity. Later in the day, you will head out again on foot to explore new areas of the reserve and continue tracking wildlife. Each walk offers different encounters, from following large mammals to observing the smaller wonders of the ecosystem. As the sun sets, you return to camp where dinner is prepared over the fire and the evening is spent sharing stories of the day’s discoveries under a vast African sky filled with stars.
On your final morning in Selati Game Reserve, you will set out on one last early walking safari while the bush is still cool and wildlife is active. This final outing offers the opportunity to encounter fresh tracks and reflect on the skills you have learned during your time in the reserve, from identifying spoor to reading the subtle signs of the wilderness. It is a wonderful chance to fully appreciate the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the African bush before the journey home.
After returning to camp, enjoy breakfast and some time to gather your belongings before being transferred back to the Selati Game Reserve headquarters where your walking safari concludes. Transfers to and from the reserve can be arranged, and assistance with onward road transfers or domestic flights is available to ensure a smooth and seamless departure.
