Step into the vast, open landscapes of the Great Karoo — an extraordinary and lesser-explored region best experienced on foot. This 7-day Karoo Walking Safari in the Samara Karoo Reserve invites you to leave the everyday behind and immerse yourself in a place where space, silence and nature take centre stage. With conservation and rewilding at its core, Samara offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with the land, discover ancient ecosystems and encounter wildlife that has been carefully reintroduced to this remarkable environment. This is a journey into raw, untamed wilderness—where every step brings you closer to the rhythm of the Karoo. The itinerary starts and ends at Port Elizabeth Airport, and we can add on additional flights if required, or extensions to see other parts of beautiful South Africa.

Departure Samara Karoo Reserve for Port Elizabeth Airport
Your journey begins on arrival at Port Elizabeth Airport, where you will be met and transferred by road into the Great Karoo. The drive takes approximately 3 hours and is a scenic introduction to this vast and beautiful region, with dramatic mountain ranges, rocky outcrops, and wide-open plains unfolding along the way.
On arrival at Samara Karoo Reserve, you will be welcomed at Karoo Lodge, your home for the next three nights. The lodge is set in a tranquil valley surrounded by mountains, offering a peaceful and immersive Karoo setting. Karoo Lodge combines classic farmhouse charm with modern comfort, featuring spacious suites with en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning, and private verandas that look out over the surrounding landscape. The main lodge area includes comfortable lounges, a dining room, and a swimming pool, providing a relaxing space to unwind between activities.
After settling into your room, you can spend the rest of the day at leisure—perhaps enjoying the views, taking a walk around the lodge, or simply relaxing after your journey. This is a wonderful opportunity to ease into the rhythm of the Karoo and prepare for the immersive walking safari experience that lies ahead.
Your days at Karoo Lodge are centred around immersive walking safaris, offering a unique way to experience the vast landscapes of the Great Karoo. Mornings begin early with tea, coffee, and a light snack before heading out on foot with your experienced guide. Walks typically last 3 to 4 hours, allowing you to explore the reserve at a slower pace while learning to read the bush—identifying animal tracks, understanding plant life, and discovering how this semi-arid ecosystem supports a surprising diversity of wildlife.
Samara is a leading rewilding project, and during your walks, you may encounter species such as giraffe, zebra, springbok, kudu, and other antelope, as well as smaller creatures and an abundance of birdlife. With time and patience, there is also the possibility of tracking larger wildlife such as cheetah, which have been successfully reintroduced to the reserve. Your guide will share insights into animal behaviour, conservation efforts, and the delicate balance of this recovering landscape.
After your morning walk, return to the lodge for a hearty brunch and time to relax during the heat of the day. Afternoons are more flexible, with shorter walks, scenic drives, or time spent enjoying the lodge’s facilities, such as the pool or shaded verandas. As the sun sets, gather for dinner and reflect on the day’s discoveries under the vast Karoo sky.
After breakfast at Karoo Lodge, you will set out on foot into a more remote section of the reserve, beginning your transition into the Samara Fly Camping Experience. Carrying only the essentials, you will walk through the landscape with your guide, learning even more about navigation, tracking, and the subtle details of the Karoo environment. The walk to camp typically takes a few hours, with plenty of stops along the way to observe wildlife and discuss the surroundings.
Your fly camp is set up in a secluded wilderness area, offering a simple yet memorable overnight experience. Comfortable bedrolls, lantern lighting, and a dining area under the open sky create an authentic connection to nature. This is a true “back-to-basics” safari, where the focus is on the environment around you rather than modern comforts.
As evening falls, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner around the fire and take in the silence and vastness of the Karoo. With minimal light pollution, the stargazing here is exceptional, offering a clear view of the Milky Way and southern constellations. Falling asleep under the stars is a highlight of the experience and a rare opportunity to disconnect and fully immerse yourself in the wilderness.
Wake early and enjoy a light breakfast at fly camp before setting off on foot once again. This morning’s walk takes you back toward Karoo Lodge, typically lasting around 3 to 4 hours depending on the route and wildlife encounters along the way. As you walk, you will continue to build on your tracking skills and deepen your understanding of the Karoo’s unique ecosystem.
On arrival back at Karoo Lodge, you will have time to freshen up and enjoy a well-deserved brunch before preparing for your onward transfer. Later in the day, you will be transferred by vehicle through the reserve to Plains Camp, your home for the next two nights. The drive offers further opportunities to spot wildlife along the way.
Plains Camp is set in a remote and open part of the reserve, offering a more intimate and back-to-nature experience. The camp features a small number of beautifully appointed tented suites with en-suite bathrooms and views across the plains. The main area is relaxed and welcoming, with a focus on simplicity, comfort, and connection to the surrounding landscape. After settling in, enjoy dinner and the peaceful atmosphere of this secluded camp.
Your final full day continues with guided walking safaris from Plains Camp, exploring a different area of the reserve. With your growing knowledge, you will begin to recognise tracks, interpret signs, and better understand the rhythms of the bush. Walks are unhurried and immersive, allowing you to fully appreciate the details that are often missed on traditional vehicle safaris.
This area of Samara is known for its open plains and rolling hills, providing excellent visibility for wildlife sightings. You may encounter herds of antelope, giraffe moving across the landscape, and a variety of bird species. There is also the chance to track predators such as cheetah or learn about the reintroduction of species like black rhino, which form part of the reserve’s long-term conservation vision.
After your morning activity, return to camp for brunch and time to relax. The afternoon may include another walk, a scenic drive, or simply time spent enjoying the tranquillity of the Karoo. Your final evening is spent around the fire, sharing stories and reflecting on your journey through this remarkable landscape.
Your walking safari comes to an end, and you will be left with a deeper connection to the land, a greater understanding of its wildlife and conservation efforts, and lasting memories of exploring the Great Karoo on foot - an experience that is both grounding and unforgettable.
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at Plains Camp before preparing for your departure. You will be transferred back through the reserve and onward by road to Port Elizabeth Airport, a journey of approximately 3 hours.
